The New Mexico Jazz Workshop’s (NMJW) goal is to promote the genres of jazz, blues, and salsa to New Mexicans across the state. The Loan Fund has helped in this mission since 2005. “New Mexico is very culturally diverse,” says Maud Beenhouwer, interim director of the NMJW. “Our organization plays a critical role in enhancing the cultural vitality that makes our state great.” Founded in 1976, NMJW is the oldest and largest nonprofit jazz organization in New Mexico. NMJW hosts 20-25 concerts per year, bringing some of the greatest names in jazz, blues, and salsa to New Mexico, while also helping to support local artists. NMJW has become one of the leading arts organizations in Albuquerque, boasting an annual audience of more than 25,000. Equally important is NMJW’s jazz education programs, which cater to all ages and ability levels. Year-round jazz classes and camps are offered, and programs reach approximately 10,000 students annually. With assistance from The Loan Fund, NMJW was able to purchase a building in Albuquerque that includes office space, a recording studio, and classrooms. “We are always looking for new ways to reach a wider audience,” Beenhouwer says. “The Loan Fund has made it possible for us to extend our concert series for more New Mexicans to enjoy, while also helping to support local artists…. We thank The Loan Fund for their support of our thriving local music scene.” |
