The London Frontier Theatre Company is one of New Mexico’s only resident theatre companies.
The theatre’s goal is to produce a variety of plays from original scripts, ensemble works, myths and legends, and adaptations of literary classics and contemporary writings, incorporating the area’s vivid multicultural influences, to create exciting, entertaining theatre for rural central New Mexico. Founded in 1996, London Frontier Theatre Company has produced more than 45 original productions in 14 seasons.
With the signs of recession moving from Wall Street to Magdalena, London Frontier Theatre Company has run into some economic hardships. The Loan Fund has worked closely with the theatre to rearrange payments in an effort to keep one of Socorro County’s only theatre venues open.
In addition, all of the theatre company’s plays are staged at the historic WPA Theatre, which was built circa-1940 as part of the New Deal. Through generous donations and with The Loan Fund’s assistance, London Frontier Theatre Company has transformed the old gym into a thriving performing arts center.
“We’re so thankful to The Loan Fund for their continued support of our theatre,” says Donna Todd, founder of the London Frontier Theatre Company. “We’re helping to preserve some of the local culture and history of the area because we put on plays that are all about our community. We’re a modern-day remembrance of what life was like for the pioneers who dared to venture westward. If we don’t help to preserve that lifestyle, it’s too easy for it all to be lost or forgotten.”
